A QR menu lets your customers scan a code at your counter, table or window, browse your menu on their own phone, and place an order without waiting in line. There is no app for them to download - the menu opens straight in their mobile browser.
This article is written for quick service restaurants - cafes, fast food outlets, bakeries, juice bars and food trucks - where customers order and collect at a counter. If you run a dine-in restaurant and want a separate QR code per table with orders pushed to a tab, please read How To Set Up Tables For Your Restaurant instead.
Setting up takes about 30 minutes, most of which is entering your menu items.
Watch The Setup
The whole setup, start to finish. Every step is written out below as well.
Before You Begin
A QR menu is part of the Digital Ordering Hub addon. If it is not on your plan yet, you will see an upgrade prompt in the Online section. Please read Subscriptions.
If you plan to accept card payments online, you will need a merchant account. Please read Payments.
Step 1 - Login
Login to the web app with your email and password. If you do not have an account yet, please follow Registration. If you have forgotten your password, please read Login.
Step 2 - Create Your Organization
An organization is your shop. Everything you enter - products, orders, settings - belongs to it, and your QR menu is generated from it. Skip this step if you have already created one.
Select I am a Business Owner, then click Get Started.
Fill in your country, company name, website and full business address. All the fields are explained in Create Organization.
Click Complete Setup.
The country you choose here sets your currency and your payment options, so please choose carefully. To learn more about organizations, please read Organizations.
Step 3 - Add Your Menu Items
Every item on your QR menu is a product. You can create an unlimited number of products under any subscription.
To add items one at a time, please follow Add Products. Name and Price are required. The Description is what your customers read on the menu, so it is worth filling in.
If your menu is already in a spreadsheet, you can import it in one go. Please follow Add Bulk Products and save your file in CSV format.
Add a photo to each item. Items with photos sell noticeably better on a QR menu, and items without one show a placeholder image. Please follow Product Images.
Group your items into categories - Coffee, Burgers, Sides, Drinks. Categories appear as a row of tiles at the top of your QR menu and are how customers navigate it.
If you track stock, you can also set quantities and restocking on each product. Please read Products Restocking.
Step 4 - Set Up Your Taxes
Please set your taxes before you take your first online order, so your customers are charged correctly from day one.
India merchants are taxed per product. Please read GST Overview.
Step 5 - Turn On Your Online Store
This is the step that publishes your menu. Please follow Online Settings for the full detail on each option.
Select your organization.
Select More in the top nav menu, then Settings, then the Online section.
Toggle Enable on. You can turn this off any time you want to stop taking online orders - during a rush, or after closing time.
Note down the ID shown in the top right corner of the section. You need it in the next step.
Set Body Background and Font Color to match your branding. Please keep them in contrast to each other so your menu stays readable.
Select any Fees that should apply to online orders, such as a packaging or service fee. Fees are managed under the Fees tab.
Choose how customers pay and collect.
USA - under Payment Types, select Allow Cash if customers pay at the counter on collection, and Allow Card if you want them to pay online. Card requires a merchant account.
India - under Order Fulfillment, select Pickup for counter collection, and Delivery if you deliver. Check Require Payment For Pickup if the order must be paid before you start making it. Customers pay via UPI - the QR code is shown to them after the order is placed, and it is your responsibility to confirm the payment before you process the order.
Click Save.
Step 6 - Create Your QR Code
Your menu is now live at the address below. Please replace <ID> with the ID you noted in Step 5.
https://doh.expensehut.com/stores/<ID>/online
Open the link on your own phone first and confirm your menu, prices and photos look right.
Turn that link into a QR code using any QR code generator, then print it.
Place the code where customers are already waiting - the counter, the queue, table tents, the window, or on takeaway bags for repeat orders.
Please add a short line of text next to the code, such as Scan to order. Customers order far more often when the code tells them what it does.
The link never changes, so a printed code keeps working after you change your menu, prices or colors.
Step 7 - Place A Test Order
Use the Preview button in the Online section to see your store status page.
Scan your printed code and place a real order end to end. Check that the total, taxes and fees are what you expect, and that the order reaches your POS.
If you are accepting cards, please run a test transaction before you go live. Please follow Test Transactions.
Keeping Your Menu Up To Date
Sold out of an item? Please remove it or set its quantity to zero in Products. Your menu updates immediately.
Closing for the day, or too busy to take online orders? Toggle Enable off in Online Settings. Your printed codes start working again the moment you toggle it back on.
Adding table service later? A per-table QR code with live kitchen status is available through Scan To Order.
